Things to Do in Suzhou in June

Suzhou Humble Administrator GardenThe Humble Administrator's Garden

June might be the best time for you to visit Suzhou, before schools have vacation in July and tourism picks up. Typhoon season starts at the end of August. You can enjoy warm weather, the gardens and attractions of Suzhou, lower prices and more convenient travel before the peak tourism season of September and October.

Watch the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival: There is a dragon boat race at Jinji Lake. The lake is easy to reach in the city. The dragon boats are long boats that are shaped like canoes that hold 12 paddlers, one coxswain, and one boat steerer in the back. A crowd lines the shore to watch. The highlight of the Chinese festival is the dragon boat race.

Humble Administrator's Garden is one of several large traditional gardens that are the tourist highlights of Suzhou. This garden was first constructed in 1509. Along with Lingering Garden, it is considered one of China's top four old traditional gardens. It measures 52,000 square meters or 12 acres. There is a pond with little bridges as in the photo above, pavilions, and a lot of birds. You can sit and contemplate the views from the pavilions.

Lingering Garden is another of China's best traditional gardens. It is designed to make you feel that you're walking in an old Chinese countryside. Chinese instrumental music is played as you walk the winding paths, and sometimes there is a free Chinese opera performance. An artificial hill looks like a mountain, and paths wind around boulders, caves, and bonsai trees arranged to look like patches of forest. People can sit and see the views from a coffee shop and pavilions.

Shop on Guanqian Street and Pinjiang Lane. These two pedestrian streets intersect in downtown Suzhou, and both are popular with foreign tourists. Guanqian Street (观前街) is a kilometer-long pedestrian shopping street with malls and luxury stores. It is not for serious shopping but for entertainment and having a good time. Pingjiang Lu (平江路) is a little lane with cobblestones and small shops, tea houses, and antique shops. It is quieter and more relaxing, and it could be a place you step into for a break while shopping.
