Things to Do in Suzhou in November
November is a good month for enjoying the autumn colors in Suzhou's parks, gardens and water towns. The scenery in the area abounds with beautiful autumn scenery, and there is less crowding because November is low season. We recommend that you visit the big popular local gardens during low season since their beauty and the music is best appreciated when it is quiet. So think about a tour to Suzhou this month before the weather freezes in December.
Tour the Tongli Water Town: This town (pictured above) is popular for the fall scenery, narrow lanes with old architecture, and the canal boat tours. The town is about 1000 years old, and it has only recently become a tourist attraction. There are about 49 stone bridges of a variety of styles crossing 15 small canals. The town still retains some architecture from the eras of the dynasties of the Ming and Qing courts. While there, you might enjoy a meal or simply some coffee or tea in a small shop.
Enjoy Moganshan: See the autumn scenery at Moganshan after the October crowds are gone. The mountain is a three hour drive from Suzhou, but it features private cabins and hotels for relaxation in a natural setting. There are tea plantations, bamboo groves, and hiking paths on the mountain to enjoy. The peak is 724 meters (2,375 feet) high, and you can go for hikes in beautiful autumn countryside scenery in early November.
The Humble Administrator's Garden: This famous garden is one of the four best traditional gardens in China. The 52,000 square meter (12 acre) park is renowned and recognized by international bodies such as UNESCO. Visitors can watch the birds in the big pond. It was built in 1509, and it is one of Suzhou's main tourist highlights.
The Lingering Garden: This park is good to visit in low season. It isn't big at 2.3 hectares or 5.6 acres, but it is famed in China for the arrangement and landscaping that makes it seem bigger as if you were in a traditional countryside long ago. Traditional music is played for tourists as they walk the winding paths. An artificial hill is made to look like a mountain, and a miniature bonsai garden looks like a forest. The park is best enjoyed without noisy crowds.
