Guangzhou Weather in January

Weather: January is the coldest month in Guangzhou, but as a city located just south of the Tropic of Cancer, Guangzhou has moderate, cool and dry weather in winter. Clothing: A long sleeve shirt and a sweater or jacket are enough. When it rains, it feels damp, and an umbrella might be useful. Though you might feel like wearing a coat sometimes, on some sunny days it is so warm that it won't seem like winter to you.

Things to Do

Winter is one of the best times of the year to visit Guangzhou. Unlike cities in North China, Guangzhou has flowers blooming everywhere in the city in January. Guangzhou is sometimes called the "Flower City" in China for its blooming gardens all the year round.

Guangzhou's Spring Festival flower fairs are the highlight of the holidays. The flower fairs usually start three days before the Spring Festival, and events climax on the Eve. Folk artists perform, and local artists also demonstrate and sell their paintings and calligraphy works at the fairs. The major flower fairs in Guangzhou are the Xihu Flower Fair, the Donghu Flower Fair, the Liwan Flower Fair, and the Tianhe Flower Fair.

Guangzhou is one of the five best cities in China for Chinese New Year, which falls in January for about 1/3 of years.

Fireworks and more: Have fun with fireworks, try holiday food and snacks, buy tourist souvenirs, and experience the customs. On the New Year's Eve, a public display explodes over the Pearl River downtown.

Enjoy a Pearl River Cruise: Dine, see the highlights, and during Chinese New Year, see the fireworks. The river is lit up, and see one of the world's tallest towers along the river.

January is generally low travel season.
