Guangzhou Weather in September

If you visit Guangzhou in September, you'll still find the weather feeling quite summer-like. Daytime temperatures mostly remain between 27–33°C (81–91°F). However, unlike the intense heat of July and August, September mornings feel cooler, with temperatures about 2–3°C lower, especially from around the 20th onwards.

Rainfall also decreases noticeably compared to the summer months, with around 13 rainy days. Most rain comes as brief afternoon or evening showers, which won't significantly affect your itinerary.

Is September a Good Time to Visit Guangzhou?

Despite the heat, September is a great time to visit Guangzhou because it's less crowded and more affordable than July, August, and October. In addition, it is full of fun Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations.

• July and August: China's summer vacation period. Expect crowded attractions and high hotel prices.
• October: Early October (Oct 1–7) is the National Day holiday, and after Oct 15, the Canton Fair brings a large number of visitors. Hotel prices are about 50% higher than usual during this time.
• Mid-Autumn Festival in late September (September 25th, 2026) is an excellent opportunity to experience local traditional culture and savor mooncakes. Many parks host Mid-Autumn lantern fairs, cultural exhibitions, and festive food tasting events. You can join the locals in celebrating this traditional holiday.

6 Unique Things to Do in Guangzhou in September

Although the weather in September is still relatively warm, it's no longer as intensely hot or crowded as July and August. You can visit most attractions fairly comfortably.

I suggest scheduling outdoor activities in the cooler mornings and using the afternoons for Guangzhou's diverse indoor experiences. For example, you can visit the XPeng Motors factory to see how AI is applied to electric vehicle production lines. Or visit Guangzhou's largest textile district and witness "China Speed" in action, how a piece of fabric can be turned into a finished garment in just 48 hours. 1. Experience Mid-Autumn Festival - Lanterns, Mooncakes, and Moonlit Guangzhou

For an immersive Mid-Autumn Festival experience, I recommend visiting the Guangzhou Cultural Park Lantern Fair in the city center or heading to Yuexiu Park for moon gazing.

• Cultural Park Lantern Fair (lasts about one week): During the festival, the park features dozens of large lantern displays and nearly 2,000 ambient lights, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern lighting techniques.
• Yuexiu Park: With its hills and lakes, this scenic park is a favorite moon-viewing spot for locals. As the full moon rises, families lay out picnic mats, set up tents, and arrange snacks and mooncakes. You're welcome to bring your own mooncakes and snacks and join in the celebration. It's an experience you won't find in other month.

If you'd like to do both, I suggest spending the evening of the festival at Yuexiu Park for moon gazing, then heading to the Cultural Park Lantern Fair for another night.

2. Explore Fabric and Clothing Market to Understand China's Speed

Known as the "Textile Capital," Guangzhou's largest textile hub is the Zhongda Textile District. It is also the most densely concentrated fabric distribution center in the world.

Step into a garment workshop, you would witness how fabric is transformed into finished clothing in just 48 hours. In the urban villages nearby, you'll experience the unique "live-eat-work-on-site" lifestyle of the workers - something you won't find anywhere else.

3. Explore Gulong Gorge's Waterfall Scenery and Enjoy Thrilling Activities

Although Gulong Gorge is known as a summer retreat in July and August when the waterfalls are at their fullest, September offers the advantage of fewer crowds. With the summer crowds gone, you can explore more leisurely.

As you walk along the valley trail and reach the glass platform in the canyon, you'll be pleasantly surprised to find that September brings especially high visibility. The distant mountain peaks stand out sharply against the blue sky and white clouds, making for stunning photos.

Standing on the transparent glass bridge and looking down, you'll see the stream in the canyon shimmering with an emerald-like glow. Plus, with the cooler weather, activities like the QQ Racing Car and Cliff Racer feel even more exhilarating.

Our colleagues visited last September for a site inspection and found that most attractions (except for canyon rafting) had virtually no wait times. If you're interested in rafting, you can book a VIP ticket with us to skip the queue (about 1 hour).

Note: The QQ Racing Car and Cliff Racer have age restrictions: only those aged 12–60 can participate. If you're outside this range, you'll need to walk down the mountain, which takes about half an hour.

4. Experience Cantonese Morning Tea Just Like a Local

Guangzhou is the birthplace of Cantonese morning tea (Yum Cha). Morning tea is one of the most popular local lifestyle traditions in Guangzhou. When you visit, I highly recommend experiencing it at least once. Here, you can witness how locals spend leisurely moments with their families and friends.

Locals typically head to teahouses between 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM, ordering a pot of tea along with various dim sum and snacks to enjoy with family and friends. I suggest going after 11:00 AM, this way, you can combine it with lunch, and waiting times are shorter.

There are many long-established morning tea restaurants in Guangzhou. Well-known ones include Diandude, Taotao Ju, and Guangzhou Restaurant, all with branches across various districts in the city. I've personally enjoyed morning tea at Diandude. Their decor is traditional and elegant, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. It is perfect for family gatherings.

Restaurants tend to be more crowded on weekends, so visiting on a weekday is recommended.

5. Explore Kaiping Diaolou (Watchtowers) and Discover a Story of Chinese Emigration

Just 1.5 hours away in Kaiping City, you can witness the region's only UNESCO World Heritage Site: the Kaiping Diaolou. These unique watchtowers were built by local overseas Chinese who were forced to emigrate during times of turmoil. When peace returned, they sent money back home to rebuild the villages they had left behind.

Surrounded by rice fields, bamboo groves, the watchtowers are scattered across dozens of villages in Kaiping, with over 1,800 towers in total. The best-preserved and most visually impressive clusters are in Zili Village and Liyuan Garden, which are only a 10-minute drive apart. I suggest visiting both.

There are many interesting untold stories behind the watchtowers. I recommend exploring with a local guide, who will share tales you won't find in any brochure.

To make the most of your day, after exploring the watchtowers, you can take a short 10-minute drive to Chikan Ancient Town. Here, you can ride a vintage "ding-ding tram" through the ancient streets, enjoy a lion dance performance, or taste local specialties like tofu horns and other snacks.

6. Explore the Kung Fu City of Foshan: Learn Wing Chun and Visit a Weekend Market

Foshan is known as the cradle of Kung Fu. Just an hour's drive from Guangzhou, I highly recommend visiting to experience the charm of Chinese Kung Fu. Foshan is also home to the largest weekend market near Guangzhou, where you can truly understand the Cantonese philosophy that just about any ingredient can be turned into something delicious.

At the former residence of Wing Chun Grandmaster Ip Man, you'll witness the legacy and historical background of Wing Chun and feel the deep master-disciple bond between Ip Man and Bruce Lee.

Afterwards, under the personal guidance of a Wing Chun inheritor, you'll take part in a one-hour hands-on session, experiencing firsthand the essence of Wing Chun's "speed to defeat the enemy" and appreciating the practicality and philosophy of martial arts.

If you're visiting on a Sunday, you can also head to the city's largest open-air market (liveliest from 8 to 11 AM). With around 500 street stalls lining the crisscrossing lanes, the market is filled with a dazzling variety of goods and food, guaranteed to amaze you.

What to Wear in Guangzhou in September

September dressing shifts as the month progresses:

• Early September (1st–20th): Treat it like August: lightweight, breathable fabrics, shorts and t-shirts, sunscreen, compact umbrella. The heat is real.
• Late September (20th onwards): Long sleeves become useful in the evening. The night temperature drop to 26°C feels dramatic after summer, mornings especially have an early-autumn quality. A light jacket for evenings is worth packing.
