Guangzhou Weather in September

The summer heat continues through September, but it rains less with 166 mm of total rainfall. The average low and high temperatures are respectively 23 °C (74 °F) and 31 °C (88 °F).

The first half of the month is usually cloudy or rainy, but in the latter half of the month it is drier, and it begins to cool down in the early morning and evening.

Clothing

Summer clothes such as skirts, shorts and T-shirts will still do, and sun protection is still needed; but towards the end of the month you might need warmer clothes for cool early mornings and evenings. An umbrella is recommended.

Typhoons

On average 1 to 3 tropical storms affect Guangzhou in September. The probability that one of these will be a typhoon is less than 50%.

Things to Do and Events in September

The Mid-Autumn Festival

Moon cakesMoon cakes eaten in Mid-autumn Festival

The Mid-Autumn Festival is the second biggest traditional Chinese festival. It usually falls in September and occasionally in early October. It is a festival to admire the full moon and to celebrate the harvest. Moon cakes are the favorite festival food.

If you arrive around the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, you can enjoy moon cakes and beverages on board a Pearl River cruise. On a clear night, the bright harvest moon will brighten up the river with silvery shimmers as you watch the colorfully and brightly lit buildings pass by.

Ascend the Canton Tower

As there is less rainfall in September, it is a very suitable time to ascend the Canton Tower. On a clear day you can enjoy a bird's eye view of Guangzhou city.

Walking on Shamian Island

Shamian IslandShamian Island

Shamian Island is a favorite sightseeing area. There are dozens of interesting buildings to see that date from the time when Guangzhou had a foreign enclave in the 19th century. The buildings are a hundred years old or more, and they are fine examples of several Western architectural styles.

Hiking on Baiyun Mountain

The cooler and drier weather is just right for an outing. A good destination in Guangzhou is Baiyun Mountain.

You may not able to visit the whole of Baiyun Mountain in one day, so you should choose the most suitable parts for you. You can get prepared for a hike, take the cable car to enjoy the sights, or just have a relaxing walk in a garden.

September is a Peak Travel Month

September is generally one of the three high travel months. If the Mid-Autumn Fest falls in the month, as it usually does, then there is a great jump in the number of Chinese tourists on those days.

There is also a rise in travel at the end of the month for the October 1st Chinese National Day holiday, which is a week-long holiday for many people. During these holidays, flights, trains, and buses will be packed and accommodations booked up.
