August in Guangzhou is similar to July. The temperature is still pushing 33°C (91°F). When you step outside, you are still wrapped by humidity. The rain is less predictable now, sometimes heavy and sudden, sometimes absent for days. You would see about 12 days for raining in this month.
Around August 20, when China's summer vacation comes to an end, the city exhales. Hotels drop their rates, theme parks less crowded, and those must-see spots feel manageable again.
Is August a Good Time to Visit Guangzhou?
In terms of temperature comfort and crowd levels, early to mid-August is not an ideal time to visit. However, after mid-August, as China's summer vacation comes to an end, crowds at tourist attractions begin to ease, and hotel prices return to normal levels.
Additionally, Guangzhou hosts several trade fairs and exhibitions in August. Among them, the largest and most renowned is the Guangzhou Fair (August 21 to 23, 2026). During this event, you'll have the opportunity to witness China's high-tech products firsthand, such as drones, autonomous vehicles, flying cars, and robots. It's a great opportunity to introduce children to technological innovations. For more details, see the event information below.
6 Activities Suitable for August in Guangzhou
August in Guangzhou is just as hot as July. For a more comfortable travel experience, I recommend scheduling popular outdoor attractions like the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, Chimelong Resort, and Yongqing Fang for the morning or late afternoon to avoid the scorching sun.
During the hot afternoons, you can choose plenty of air-conditioned indoor experiences, such as some of the activities listed below.
1. Take Your Kids to Guangzhou's Biggest August Fair and Discover "Created in China"
the Canton Fair ComplexThe Guangzhou Fair will be held at the Canton Fair Complex (near Canton Tower), featuring approximately 6,000 exhibition booths, showcasing cutting-edge technological products from Guangzhou and other cities across China.
The exhibition hall is enormous; exploring it fully could take 1-2 days. If you're visiting with children, I suggest focusing on selected sections, such as the technology pavilion or automotive pavilion, spending about 2–3 hours there.
Since the fairgrounds are vast and most signage is in Chinese, consider joining our Guangzhou private tour. With our guide's commentary, you'll gain a deeper understanding of China's technological development.
2. Escape the Heat at Gulong Gorge
Gulong Gorge Waterfall
Gulong Gorge – SkywalkJust 1.5-hour drive from Guangzhou, Gulong Gorge is one of the few nearby spots with lush forests, rushing waterfalls, and cool microclimate.
Gulong Gorge is quite large. The main activities include canyon hiking, sightseeing on the glass platform at the summit, and the park's rides (QQ Racing Car, Cliff Racer, and canyon rafting). You can choose the activities that interest you.
Note: The QQ Racing Car and Cliff Racer have age restrictions: only those aged 12–60 can participate. If you are not in the age range, you have to walk down the mountain for 30 minutes. For the canyon rafting, I recommend booking a VIP ticket through us, this way, you can skip the 2-hour wait during the summer peaks.
3. Spend a Day in Foshan: Learn Wing Chun and Lion Dance
Learn Wing Chun Kung Fu in Foshan
Our customers are learning Lion Dance in FoshanFoshan is known as the birthplace of Chinese Kung Fu (Wing Chun) and the hometown of Ip Man, Bruce Lee's master. In Foshan, you can not only explore exhibitions on Chinese martial arts culture but also visit a local martial arts school to learn authentic Kung Fu. It is a fantastic experience for introducing children to the charm of Kung Fu.
Foshan is about an hour's drive from Guangzhou. For a comfortable itinerary, I recommend starting in the cool of the morning by visiting Ip Man's former residence to learn about the development of Wing Chun and the personal story between Bruce Lee and his master.
As the weather gets warmer, you can learn Wing Chun in a comfortably air-conditioned martial arts school under the guidance of a Wing Chun master. You'll spend about two hours learning basic techniques and self-defense skills in air-conditioned training.
In the afternoon, visit the Lion Dance Culture Center, where you and your children can enjoy a lively lion dance performance - something even many Chinese people rarely get to see. After the show, you'll have the chance to lift the lion head yourself and learn the basic footwork and movements.
Since the Kung Fu session requires advance arrangements (at least one week), if you're interested in this activity, contact us in advance to book.
4. Cruise the Pearl River: Where Guangzhou's Skyline Lights Up the Night
Guangzhou Pearl River Night CruiseYou might be thinking of visiting the Canton Tower to see the night view, but in August, I'd actually recommend taking a Pearl River Night Cruise instead. Due to the summer vacation peak season, you might face wait times of 1-2 hours at the Canton Tower.
To capture a stunning sunset, I recommend boarding the cruise around 7 PM in the evening at Tianzi Pier. As night falls, you'll also witness the spectacular moment when the lights along both riverbanks gradually turn on. After arriving at the Canton Tower Pier, you can get a close-up view of the towering structure right at its base.
The cruise lasts about 60-70 minutes. It's recommended to book seats on the top deck for the best views. Tickets can typically be booked via the WeChat mini-program "Pearl River Night Cruise." Due to the summer vacation peak in August, it's advisable to book at least a week in advance.
5. Visit a Smart Car Factory to Learn About China's High Tech
Our customers are visiting Guangzhou XPeng Motors Factory
Guangzhou XPeng Motors Factory visitChina is the world's largest exporter of electric vehicles, and Guangzhou is one of its key production hubs. Traveling with kids during summer vacation? Then I suggest spending two hours visiting Guangzhou's largest electric vehicle factory: the XPeng Motor Factory.
Here, you'll witness firsthand how a smart car is assembled in an automated factory and even see cutting-edge Chinese technology, such as flying cars on display. It is an experience kids will absolutely love.
The XPeng factory is about a 1.5-hour drive from downtown Guangzhou. To make the most of your day, we'll arrange a morning visit to a handmade car lamp workshop, then head to the XPeng factory on the way back in the afternoon.
The XPeng factory does not accept individual visits for groups of fewer than 10 people. If your group is fewer than 10 visitors, you need to book through a partner travel agency. Thanks to our partnership with the factory, you and your family can join a tour.
Note: visits can only be arranged on weekdays (no weekends or public holidays), and children must be at least 6 years old to participate.
6. Watch a Romantic Sunset at Baiyun Mountain
Sunset at Baiyun MountainWant to enjoy outdoor activities but worried about the midday heat? Catching the sunset at Baiyun Mountain (only 10 mins drive from downtown) is a good choice.
In the late afternoon (around 6–7 PM), as the daytime heat gradually fades and the mountain breeze turns cool, you can stand hand in hand with your loved one at Moxingling Peak, gazing westward as the sun slowly sinks into the city skyline, painting the entire sky in rainbow hues. This is a romantic travel experience August has to offer. Read more at how to visit Baiyun Mountain.
What to Wear in Guangzhou in August
August dressing in Guangzhou is about survival first, style second:
- Lightweight, breathable fabrics: Cotton, linen, or moisture-wicking synthetics. You'll sweat—dress accordingly.
- Loose-fitting clothes: Tight clothing becomes unbearable in 85% humidity.
- Sun protection: Wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen (SPF 50+). The UV index is high.
- Comfortable walking shoes: Breathable sneakers or sandals with good support. Your feet will swell in the heat.
- Light layers for indoors: Air conditioning in malls, restaurants, and museums can be aggressive (18°C/64°F compared to 33°C/91°F outside). A light cardigan or scarf helps.
- Rain gear: A compact umbrella (doubles as sunshade) or a light rain jacket. August storms come without warning.
