Weather: The weather is generally dry, cool and sunny. It is never very cold in Kunming, the "Spring City." The average high temperature is 17 °C (62 °F), and the average low temperature is 4 °C (39 °F). It may freeze at night, but it rarely snows. It snows or rains only about 5 days of the month. Clothing: Generally, a coat and head covering is needed to stay warm at night, and spring attire is suitable for the sunny days. It rains little, and the weather is dry. There is a big temperature difference between day and night, so a tourist can dress in layers for the changing conditions. When it isn't raining, it is often sunny with strong UV radiation.
Things to Do in Kunming in February
Visit Green Lake Park: At this popular local city park, migratory birds flock by the thousands. The popular white Siberian seagulls are in their greatest numbers in January and February. The park is near the main gate of Yunnan University, and Kunming Zoo is nearby. The lake, trees, and the birds help you feel peaceful and relaxed. People go out on small boats on the lake, and local musicians play. There is no entrance fee. Local buses 1 and 101 go there.
Explore Stone Forest Park: This is an incredible Geopark of several square miles of stone pillars, ravines, pits, and deep caves. Certain sections look like a forest of pine trees. By climbing to the top of Lion Pavilion (Shizi Ting), the highest point the park, you can see the whole area. Be careful as you hike, since a slip might be dangerous. Wear good shoes with good traction. The Geopark is about 1 and a half hours away from the center of Kunming.
Stone Forest in SpringExperience Chinese New Year or Spring Festival holidays are a festive time in Kunming. It takes place in the first half of February about 2/3 of the years. Most families will have a reunion Chinese New Year's Eve meal, and then light millions of fireworks around Kunming around midnight! There are many cultural activities in the streets, and the local people continue to let off fireworks all around for days afterwards.
Visit Jindian Temple: On the 8th, 9th, and 10th days after the start of the new year, there is the annual Jindian Temple Fair at Jindian Park (金殿公园). It is a place to taste the local foods and watch artistic performances.
Experience Minority Festivals: There are three festivals in the month. From the 1st to 3rd of the first month in the Chinese lunar calendar, the Lieshen Festival of the Yi people is held. They sing, dance with lutes, and do bull fighting. The Mizhi Festival of the Sani minority and the Dage Festival are also held in February.
Touring Kunming in February — Low Travel Season
February is generally a quiet month for tourism unless Chinese New Year is in the month. Then it is China's biggest travel season, and many people visit the local highlights during their holidays. Expect heavy traffic at the airports, train stations and bus stations for "Golden Week".
Unless you specifically want to experience the celebrations, tourists might want to avoid the crowds and visit on other days.
