Tibet Weather in April: What to Do and Travel Tips

Written by Estella Ran Updated Nov. 13, 2025

April is one of the best months to visit Tibet. The weather turns pleasantly warm and dry after the long winter, and skies are often clear, making it one of the best times to see Mount Everest and enjoy spring in Nyingchi

April is the low travel season, crowds are still light, prices are lower, and you'll have more freedom when choosing hotels or routes before the summer rush begins.

Weather Averages in April:

  • Temperature range: 2–16°C (36–61°F)
  • Rainfall: 7 mm/ 0.3 inch
  • Clear days: 13
  • UV index: Extremely high

Best Things to Do in April

Embrace Pink Peach Blossoms in Nyingchi

In early to mid-April, Nyingchi turns into a sea of pink. Snow peaks, grasslands, rivers, and peach blossoms form a bright, layered scene. The pink flowers stand out sharply against the white Namcha Barwa peak.

For the most spectacular sea of flowers, we suggest visiting Bomi Peach Blossom Valley. This is China's largest peach-blossom valley and has the densest displays. You will also find Tibetan houses and golden rapeseed flowers spotted the ground.

This is also the time of the Nyingchi Peach Blossom Festival, held from late March to mid-April in places like Bomi County and Gala Village. Besides wandering through endless peach fields, you can enjoy Tibetan folk music, costume parades, and archery and horse-racing contests, as well as food fairs featuring local specialties.

Explore Lhasa's Iconic Sites in Peace

April is one of the best times to explore Lhasa. The weather is mild, the sky is clear, and there are far fewer tourists than in summer. You can take your time wandering through the city's most iconic sites without the usual crowds. See our 4-Day Lhasa Highlights Private Tour.

Visit the Potala Palace, the majestic symbol of Tibet, and take photos of its golden rooftops shining under the spring sun. Walk to the Jokhang Temple, the spiritual heart of Tibetan Buddhism, where locals pray and spin prayer wheels along Barkhor Street

You can also visit Norbulingka, the former summer palace of the Dalai Lamas, to enjoy its peaceful gardens in early bloom, or stop by Sera Monastery to watch the lively monk debates. If you want a quiet local spot, head to Zongjiao Lukang Park, where you can see the Potala Palace reflected in the lake.

Sightseeing and Have a Picnic at Lake Yamdrok

April is one of the best times to visit Lake Yamdrok, when the weather is clear and the colors of the lake are at their most vivid. On sunny days, the water glows in shades of turquoise blue and emerald green, shining like a gemstone in the snow-capped mountains.

You can take a leisurely walk along the lakeshore, breathe in the crisp spring air, and enjoy the calm reflection of the sky on the still surface. Friendly yaks and lambs wander nearby, and you can take photos with them or try a short yak ride for fun.

If you prefer a slower pace, we can arrange a peaceful picnic by the lake, where you can relax on the grass, enjoy snacks and fruits, and simply take in the breathtaking view of one of Tibet's most beautiful lakes. You can check our 5-Day Lhasa Classics and Lake Yamdrok Tour.

Hiking to Mt. Everest or in the Sacred Mt. Kailash

April is one of the best months to hike in Tibet. The sun is warm, the wind is mild, so you won't feel too cold when hiking.

Trekking from Old Tingri to Everest Base Camp is a popular route. The 66 km (41 miles) route leads past quiet valleys, tiny Tibetan villages, and endless snow peaks. Step by step, you'll watch Mount Everest rise ahead by your own eyes. See our 11-Day Tibet Tour with Everest Base Camp Trek.

If you prefer a more spiritual journey or something more challenging, try the Mount Kailash Kora. The 52 km (32 miles) circuit takes about three days and attracts pilgrims from across Asia. You'll walk past prayer flags and sacred stupas as the mountain glows in the highland sun.

Crowds and Costs

April is still part of Tibet's low travel season, which means low prices, fewer tourists and more hotel choices. Even though there's a public holiday in early April (Qingming Festival), most people in China spend it visiting ancestral tombs rather than traveling, so Tibet remains quiet.

Tourist numbers begin to rise toward the end of April, so visiting earlier in the month often gives you the best combination of clear weather and great value.

That said, Nyingchi is an exception. April is peak season in Nyingchi because of the Peach Blossom Festival, so it's best to book your flights and hotels at least a month in advance.

What to Wear

April weather in Tibet changes a lot between day and night. Days are usually warm and sunny, but mornings and evenings can still be chilly. Dressing in layers is the best way to stay comfortable.

You can wear a long-sleeve shirt or light sweater during the day and add a windbreaker or jacket in the evening. Many hotels and restaurants in Tibet have no central heating, so you might still need a coat inside.

In early April, temperatures are cooler, so a down jacket might be useful, while by the end of the month, lighter clothing is enough.

Because the sunlight is very strong in Tibet, bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from UV rays.
