Shanghai has always been an alluring city of intrigue, so it comes as no surprise that romance abounds in this international port. From the days of the roaring '20s to the glimmering lights of today's metropolis, romance has always been in the air.
Whether you're a blushing new couple or sentimentally inseparable, it's always wonderful to spend romantic times together. But, where can you go to share that special bond with your love? Where are the most romantic spots for a date in Shanghai? Suitably romantic places are simply endless, but let's consider some specific spots and activities that will really sway the heart.
The Park at Jing'an Temple
Right in the heart of West Nanjing Road (南京西路) across from Jing'an Temple (静安寺) is Jing'an Park. Simply exit Metro Line 2 at exit 2, and as you head away from the mall, and cross the street, you'll step into a peaceful romantic oasis.
At the entrance is a cafe with with outdoor seating, where you can stop for a coffee and pastry. But as you continue down the lane, you'll stroll through a canopy of trees surrounded by numerous points of interest to share together. You can spend some peaceful moments seated on the benches and enjoy the subtle pace of the quiet green haven.
Then, as you make your way around the park, there are pathways to explore together complete with ponds of lotus flowers and flowing water where you can relax on a wooden deck and even dip your feet.
Finally, as you wander further through the park, you'll reach a gorgeous Balinese restaurant, where you can share a romantic setting with drinks or a meal beside the pond and willow trees. It's really a difficult place to leave, but there's so much more to do.
The Shanghai Oriental Arts Center
If you're looking for a tastefully romantic place to enjoy a concert or a show, you'll want to go to the Shanghai Oriental Arts Center (东方艺术中心). There are always tremendously talented musicians and artists performing at this architecturally inspiring venue.
During the day from 10am–5pm, you may also enjoy the exhibition at the Antique Music Box Gallery located within the Oriental Arts Center. Then, in the evening, you can stay for the captivating performances.
The Fountain at Taipingqiao Park
Everywhere in the world, people are drawn to the soothing and relaxing allure of water, which always inspires pleasant and romantic feelings. Different from other parks, Taipingqiao Park (太平桥公园) in Xintiandi (新天地) has a pleasing pond with towering fountains and decorative steps winding all around. It's a place of simplicity and luxury and a wonderful place to take a break to relax in each other's arms at any time of day.
Indoor Ice Skating
One activity that truly defines a romantic moment together is gliding hand-in-hand upon the ice. Whether you slide along smoothly or not, ice skating is a moment that you'll always remember together.
If you're downtown, you can go to the top floor of the Samsung Building on the corner of East Nanjing Road (南京东路) and Xizang Road (西藏路) across from People's Square (人民广场), or you can make your way to the Mercedes Benz Arena at 1200 Expo Avenue B2/F, where you can skate to your heart's content. Holding hands upon the cool ice will always be a delightful part of a romantic evening.
Tianzifang
Possibly the top romantic place in Shanghai could be Tianzifang (田子方), because it has everything you need for a quaint and romantic date. It has a pleasant atmosphere with numerous restaurants, shops, art galleries, and cafes to choose from, and any one of them would suffice, but at the Bell Restaurant you can go upstairs and lounge amongst the pillows and subtle lighting to order drinks, snacks, or a meal while casually sharing thoughts. Of course too, you can walk together through the festive corridors of Tianzifang to view all of the charming and curious crafts amongst the unique shops within.
Ballroom Dancing
Dressed in sharp attire and waltzing upon a polished wood floor, most hearts are moved by the elegant synchronicity of ballroom dancing. Even if your skills are unpolished, your gallant effort will be quite a romantic gesture.
The Paramount Theater across from Jing'an Temple is just the place to help you share this dance together. On the second floor from 5pm–midnight, there's traditional ballroom dancing for a delightfully romantic experience.
Rooftop Lounges at the Bund
If the evening is well along but you're still filled with romantic energy, then make your way to the rooftop lounge of your choice along The Bund (Wàitān 外滩 ). Along Shanghai's waterfront, you can sip cocktails while overlooking marvelous views of the city.
As the lights of the financial towers of Pudong flash "♥SH", you cannot help but share a memorable kiss as if movie lights were shining upon you. What a wonderful way to complete your romantic tour of Shanghai. See also Enjoying Shanghai's Waterfront and Shanghai Nightlife.
