Zhangjiajie, famous for its otherworldly landscapes and breathtaking natural beauty, promises an unforgettable adventure for travelers.
Whether you're seeking a compact trip or an in-depth exploration, our itinerary suggestions would ensure that you experience the very best of this awe-inspiring destination (and they can all be custom-tailored to suit you by our team of travel advisors).
How Long to Spend in Zhangjiajie
Although the ideal duration for a trip to Zhangjiajie depends on your personal preferences and travel style, we recommend spending 3–4 days there to cover the main attractions, such as Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge, and Tianmen Mountain.
If you have less than 3 days, it's still possible to visit Zhangjiajie, but the trip would be quite rushed.
For a more immersive experience, and if you have more than 4 days available, we suggest that you extend your trip to Fenghuang Ancient Town for an in-depth insight into the region's architecture and local culture whilst enjoying a leisurely pace in a charming place.
4 Days in Zhangjiajie - The Classic Zhangjiajie Adventure
Spending 4 days in Zhangjiajie is most recommended. During this 4-day tour, you'll have the chance to explore the highlights of Zhangjiajie, including Zhangjiajie National Forest Park with its Avatar Mountain, Tianmen Mountain, and the Glass Bridge.
- Day 1: Zhangjiajie Arrival
- Day 2: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park: Hike around the park and marvel at the sandstone pillars, lush forests, and jaw-dropping vistas. Don't miss the iconic Avatar Halleluyah Mountain, which inspired the floating mountains in the movie "Avatar".
- Day 3: Thrilling Experience on the Glass Bridge: Walk on Zhangjiajie's record-breaking glass bridge, 300 meters above ground level, for a unique experience. Hike in the 'Grand Canyon' around the bridge, immersing yourself in the scenery of mountains, streams, caves, cliffs, and forests.
- Day 4: Tianmen Mountain: Take the world's longest cable car to the mountain top, and enjoy the thrilling experience of a more than 70-degree ascent in the car in one section. Climb the steps to Heaven's Door and brave your respect (or fear) of heights on the glass walkway.
2 Days in Zhangjiajie - Quick Visit
While it's possible to have a 2-day tour in Zhangjiajie, it would be quite limited and rushed, especially considering that Zhangjiajie is located in a remote area far from China's major tourist travel routes.
In two days, you can visit some of the main attractions, such as Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, focusing on the Avatar Mountains area and Tianzi Mountain, or Tianmen Mountain. However, you won't have time for leisurely sightseeing, or experiencing the local culture.
Customized 2 Days Itinerary for Zhangjiajie
- Day 1: Zhangjiajie Arrival: If you arrived early in the morning (before 9am), you could fit a visit to Tianmen Mountain in.

To truly appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of Zhangjiajie, it's recommended to extend your stay to at least 3–4 days.

Best Times to Visit and Essential Travel Tips
The best times to visit Zhangjiajie are during spring and autumn.
Travel in Autumn (September to November)
The weather is pleasant and comfortable, with temperatures ranging between 13°C (55°F) and 23°C (73°F) on average. There is also less rain during these months.
However, it's also the busy travel season. Let experienced local travel experts like us help you plan your tour; otherwise, even in the best season, you might have a poor experience due to large crowds and long queues!
Travel in Spring (April to June): Enjoy pleasant spring weather (warm temperatures, but moderate to high rainfall), lush greenery, and fewer crowds compared to the summer months.
Travel during China's Summer Holiday (July and August)
July and August are the busiest tourist season, so expect crowds and long lines. However, if you travel with us, our guide will help you avoid the crowds as much as possible.
Travel in Winter: Traveling in winter is possible, but we don't recommend it due to the cold weather. Fog and snow can make it difficult to enjoy the scenery, and roads in the mountains can be slippery.
