Xinjiang Weather in October (Travel Tips for First-Timers)

Written by Phoebe Ran Updated May. 30, 2024

October is a cooler month for Xinjiang travel with daily temperatures ranging from cool to moderately chilly and generally little/low rainfall.

The average temperatures range from 4–19°C (39–66°F) and the temperature in southern Xinjiang is higher than that in northern Xinjiang. As for daily temperatures, you would probably experience chilly early mornings and nights of 4–8°C (39–46°F) and mild daytime temperatures at 16–20°C (61–68°F).

Rainfall averages in October vary across the different cities in Xinjiang. Most cities experience almost no rain while some northern Xinjiang cities (such as Urumqi and Kanas) might have light rain and even light snow.

Top Places to Visit and Things to Do in October

The gentle daytime temperatures and clear skies in October allow for enjoyable outdoor activities. Nature lovers could be captivated by the scenic beauty of northern Xinjiang (Urumqi, Burqin, Yining...), while if you are a fan of history and culture, southern Xinjiang (Turpan, Kashgar, Hotan, Kuqa...) is an ideal destination for you.

Urumqi

In October, Urumqi usually has mildly chilly temperatures and minimal rainfall, making it an ideal month to explore the city.

Exploring stunning Heavenly Lake with your partner, friends, or family would be refreshing. Heavenly Lake features picturesque scenery. Climbing up the wooden walkway is the most popular way to enjoy the scenery. Take a cruise for a relaxing look at the surrounding mountains or ride the cable car to Maya Mountain for a captivating view of Bogda Peak. You could enjoy a yurt lunch midway to savor local flavors and delve into the Kazakh culture in the region.

Have a relaxing walk in the Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar (Erdaoqiao Bazaar), which is the largest bazaar in China. It is filled with local crafts that are very atypical to the Western eye. Bargaining alongside your friends/partner/family to get the best price for a souvenir would be an interesting experience.

Turpan

Turpan, known as the Land of Fire, experiences one of its most comfortable months of weather in October, which is perfect for outdoor activities.

As a significant stop on the ancient Silk Road, Turpan lures history and culture buffs. You could discover the ancient ruins of Jiaohe, renowned as the world's best-preserved earth building city, and delve underground to explore the Karez Well System. Chatting with local Uyghur families in their courtyards in the oldest Uyghur village would be a good chance to experience the Uyghur culture. Enjoy the delightful surprise of tasting sweet and delicious grapes at Grape Valley in its harvest season.

Kashgar

Kashgar is one of the most popular destinations in Xinjiang and even in China. October weather in Kashgar is usually delightful, with a pleasant average daily high temperature of about 20°C (68°F) and minimal rainfall.

Stroll in Kashgar Old City to capture exotic moments among Islamic architecture with your camera. Witness a special opening ceremony at 10:30am and dance with Uyghur folk. Discover the array of traditional musical instruments in local shops. Enjoy some Xinjiang afternoon tea with the locals in the ancient teahouse. Kashgar Old City is also the best choice to enjoy the local cuisine.

Have a glimpse of local life in the Kashgar Grand Bazaar, which attracts locals and merchants from all over Xinjiang and nearby countries. On Sundays, people take their livestock to the Livestock Market for trading and shearing. It is quite interesting to witness their traditional methods of bargaining.

What Should I Wear in October?

In October, you should take both moderately warm and cold-resistant clothing, such as tops with long sleeves, coats, sweaters, and down jackets. Cold evenings require warm layers, such as sweaters and down jackets.

Hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen are a must to protect against the strong sunshine in Turpan.

Costs and Crowding

For a private tour based on two travelers and 4- or 5-star hotels, the travel cost is US$350–400 per person per day. The more people traveling in your group, the cheaper the price, so inviting more family members or friends would achieve a better price.

During the National Day holiday (October 1st to 7th), the price would be more expensive and there would be more tourists. Booking in advance typically leads to cost savings and increases your travel flexibility. Contact us for a tailor-made private tour to maximize your travel experience.
