7 day Beijing trip with China Highlights
![]() We were in Beijing for 7 days and went to the Great Wall, Gubei Watertown, Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Lama Temple, Beihai Park, Confucius Temple, Ming and Qing Tombs. Also went to watch the Acrobatic Show and the Golden Mask Show. The views are fantastic and the shows are amazing. Our tour guide, Colin, from China Highlights was awesome. He planned our itinerary flawlessly and took us to restaurants that served great authentic local food. Colin is very caring of my elderly mother and provided superb service. Temple of Heaven: Located in Beijing, the Temple of Heaven is a remarkable complex of Taoist buildings built in 1420 during the Ming dynasty. Emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties used to visit this place annually to perform ceremonies and pray for bountiful harvests. The park surrounding the temple buzzes with life, especially in the mornings when local elderly residents gather for singing, exercising, and practicing tai chi. Spanning 273 hectares in the south of Central Beijing, the park offers a pleasant 1-1½ hour (1½ kilometer) walk, graded as easy.
Mutianyu Great Wall: The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall is renowned for its stunning scenery and well-preserved architecture, making it the top-ranked Great Wall section on TripAdvisor. This section is ideal for families with children, as it provides various ways to explore. It is approximately a 1.5-hour drive from downtown Beijing. In 1986, a 2½-kilometer section was completely restored.

To optimize your time, we have arranged a round-trip cable car experience for ascending and descending the Wall, eliminating the need for climbing steps that would take around 40 minutes. Upon reaching the Wall, you will have free time to explore and appreciate the surroundings, following a brief introduction from your guide.
The Forbidden City: Located in the heart of Beijing, the Forbidden City served as the imperial residence for 24 emperors during the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) dynasties. As the world's largest and best-preserved ancient imperial complex, it showcases a grand square, magnificent halls, intricate gates, gardens, courtyards, and living quarters. With both permanent and temporary exhibitions, the Forbidden City houses important treasures of ancient China. This tour involves approximately 2 hours of walking (covering 2 kilometers), with a moderate difficulty level.

Jinshan Park (overlooking the Forbidden City): Previously a part of the Forbidden City, Jinshan Park lost some structures when walls were torn down and a road was built in the early 1900s. Interestingly, the park's hill was created using soil excavated to construct the palace moat. On clear days, the climb to Jinshan Park rewards visitors with breathtaking panoramic views of the Forbidden City and Beijing.
Tiananmen Square: Situated in central Beijing, Tiananmen Square is the largest city square in the world. Its name is derived from the Tiananmen (Gate of Heavenly Peace) located to the north, separating it from the Forbidden City. This square holds significant cultural value, having witnessed pivotal moments in Chinese history. Surrounded by imposing buildings such as the Heavenly Gate (entrance to the Forbidden City), museums, government edifices, and Chairman Mao's Mausoleum, Tiananmen Square stands as an enduring symbol of China's national pride.

The palace's influence on Chinese horticulture and landscape design is significant. During your visit, you will explore the park for approximately 2 hours (covering 2 kilometers) on foot.
The Terracotta Warriors and Horses: Unearthed accidentally in 1974, the Terracotta Warriors and Horses are a remarkable army consisting of over 7,000 soldiers, archers, horses, and chariots, standing in full battle formation. These figures have been guarding Emperor Qin's tomb since 210 BC. Each warrior is unique, and ongoing meticulous restoration and excavation work can be witnessed in the three protected pits housed within expansive hangars. Located about 1.5 hours from Xian, there is also an exceptional museum where you can learn about the history of the vaults through informative exhibits and a fascinating film. Photography (without flash) is allowed, and we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes for the visit.

Ancient City Wall: The ancient city wall is a remarkable testament to the city's history, featuring walls, ramparts, gates, and watchtowers that comprise one of the oldest and most well-preserved city defenses in existence. Originally built in the 13th century on the foundations of the Tang Forbidden City, the wall surrounds the city center area. You have the option to explore the wall on foot or, for an additional cost, rent a bike (CNY 40 per person) or an electric cart (CNY 80 per person) to traverse the full 14-kilometer circuit.
