What This Means For You
You can generally find better bargains on most products than elsewhere in Asia while at the same time enjoying yourself. You'll find about the widest variety of products in Asia along with about the best dining and best luxury stores in Asia at the best prices.
Summer promotions: Many retailers throw attractive summer sales promotions to lure people back from the city's beaches. This is also the time that many fashion labels begin to launch their latest autumn/winter looks.
Don't sweat the summer heat: Hong Kong can be sweltering in July and August, but don't fret about it because every mall in Hong Kong has air conditioning. This makes shopping a pleasant experience. However, we do recommend getting out on the streets to enjoy the life and do some bargaining in any of the street markets. It is comfortable after sundown, and you can try the street food and eat outside when the weather is good.
Shopping Malls
Hong Kong doesn't have the biggest shopping malls in Asia, but they are big, and some are very ritzy. In them, you'll find a lot of Asia's best restaurants as rated by the Michelin Guide. The malls in Hong Kong range from the most luxurious to middle priced.
- Luxury malls feature the world's top fashion and extremely luxurious and extravagant products. The best include the Landmark for fashion and IFC Mall for electronics.
- Middle priced malls such as Tung Chung's CityGate Outlets have brand-name store outlets such as Adidas and Giordano and Shatin's large New Town Plaza.
Hong Kong Island is Special for Shopping, Sightseeing, and Recreation
Hong Kong Island has some of the area's best malls in a big area stretching from Central District to Causeway Bay, and the priciest malls are next to each other in Central District such as the Landmark and the IFC Mall.
Transport: Access to Central District is easy via the Star Ferry terminal in Central or the Central MTR station. From the Star Ferry terminal in Central, there is a long covered walkway above the ground that goes directly to the IFC skyscraper. From there, it is a short walk to the Landmark.
Parks and sightseeing: On the island, there are also parks, good free zoos, natural parks and beaches, hiking areas, and the big and renovated Ocean Park amusement park. So along with shopping, you can recreate and have some fun. Strolling around the area, you can see the British Colonial buildings and visit the parks and zoos.
Parks and beaches: Much of the island is covered by public forest land that makes the island scenery beautiful and that makes for good and safe natural hiking areas. All of these attractions on the one island makes the place a good place go shopping with kids.
Dining: From Chinese noodle restaurants to the most high-style gourmet French and Cantonese restaurants in the Landmark or the IFC Towers, you have a wide range of places to eat juxtaposed all together in Central and Admiralty.

Electronics
People in Hong Kong have a high demand for quality electronics. Therefore, the latest is always available. International brands are sold cheaper in Hong Kong than Chinese mainland because of high tariffs there, so crowds of Chinese pack the stores.
Hong Kong is also a good place to get bargains on Chinese-made electronics. Chinese buyers shop here because of the better quality and reliability of Chinese-made goods.
- Shopping tip: Sham Shui Po generally has the best bargain computer and accessories deals in Hong Kong. It is also where you can find repair shops for computer repairs and second-hand products. Beware of stolen goods and fake products though.
- Golden Computer Center is a large electronics market for electronics bargains. It has everything from blank CDs to entire computers. It is internationally famous and crowded. It is about 100 meters north of Sham Shui Po MTR Exit D2.
- Photography equipment: Stanley Street on Hong Kong Island and Sai Yeung Choi Street on the Kowloon side are where the professional photographers prefer to go for new lenses or cameras.
- Smartphones are best bought outside of China because the ones made and sold in China are built for the Chinese marketplace, and they don't meet the international standard. For example, they won't have Google Play.
- Apple products: The large Apple stores in Hong Kong sell the latest versions about 10 percent cheaper than in the Chinese mainland. The IFC Mall has a big Apple store.
Cosmetics
In the bigger shopping malls in Central in Hong Kong, you can find most brands of cosmetics. These stores offer you more service and are willing to cater to your needs. Prices are often good, and you can find both Asian and Western brands alike. They are sold for much more in China.
If you want something less expensive, the stores Colourmix, Sasa, and Bonjour can be found all over Hong Kong, and they have a reasonable range of products both for make-up and skin care. These stores are worth a bargain hunt.
Outlet Stores
Not quite willing to spend too much money on shopping, but want something good? Pressed for time before leaving or have a long layover? Hong Kong has several outlet stores. One of them is Citygate that is conveniently located in Tung Chung on Lantau Island and is only 5 minutes from the airport. The big mall has several of the big brands of sports attire, cosmetics and clothes. In addition, there are several restaurants and a big food court to sit down at for a little something to eat.
