About Typhoons in Hong Kong
Each year, about 30 tropical cyclones form in the western Pacific region and in the South China Sea. Half of them have typhoon strength.
The weather in Hong Kong is generally sunny and hot when the tropical cyclones are generated. But when the cyclones approach, the wind will increase and reach velocities of 118 km/h or higher and bring in heavy rain.
On some occasions, the extreme weather can last for days. It is unlikely that the typhoons will cause landslides or flooding.
Good Things to Know About Typhoons
Strong typhoons may cause flights to or from Hong Kong to be canceled.
Hong Kong is well prepared for typhoons. There is an adequate warning system, and the buildings are designed to withstand strong typhoons, so you don't need to worry too much about personal safety.

The Hungry Ghost Festival (盂蘭節)
The Hungry Ghost Festival, also called the Yu Lan Festival, falls on the 15th day of the 7th lunar month (generally in August). Like Halloween, this is a festival related to ghosts in Chinese culture.
In the traditional Chinese belief, the ghosts of ancestors will return during the 7th lunar month, so some people in Hong Kong light up red candles and burn a kind of "faux money" to worship their ancestors, especially in the 15th day of the lunar month. For overseas visitors, this is a wonderful chance to see some living culture of the residents.
In this month, parks, squares and courtyards in Hong Kong will host celebrations. The largest one is the Yu Lan Culture Festival in Victoria Park in Causeway Bay. There are also Chinese Opera performances around the city.
