I feel that Sanxingdui gives off a sense of collision between mystery and shock.
One of our German tourists described Sanxingdui like this: "When I first stepped into Sanxingdui, I was 'stared at' by a bronze mask that sent chills down my spine. Its pupils protrude 16 centimeters, as if they can see through time and space. This might be the world's earliest alien surveillance device."
The uniqueness of Sanxingdui lies not only in its challenge to the "Central Plains Theory" of Chinese civilization but also in how it weaves a sci-fi world of ancient Shu through artifacts like golden scepters, bronze sacred trees, and solar wheels.
If you've watched the documentary "Ancient Aliens," you might wonder: "Did the ancient Shu people really come into contact with extraterrestrial civilizations?" As a guide who has visited Sanxingdui dozens of times, I am more than happy to join you in unraveling the mysteries of Sanxingdui once again.

Hi, I'm Jason, and I have hosted many foreign tourists, including some important figures such as the King of Gambling from Macau and a prince from the British royal family. I was born in Chengdu and am very familiar with the city's history, culture, and cuisine. Whether it's the adorable pandas, the ancient charm of Kuanzhai Alley, or the spicy and flavorful hot pot, I hope to have the opportunity to guide you in experiencing the charm of this "Land of Abundance".

Itinerary from Chengdu to Sanxingdui

Sanxingdui is located about 50 kilometers north of Chengdu, with a travel time of approximately 1 hour. You can take a high-speed train and then a taxi or go directly by taxi from Chengdu to Sanxingdui.
There are high-speed trains from Chengdu East Station to Guanghan North Station, taking 18 minutes and costing 18 CNY. After exiting the station, it's a 7-kilometer ride to the Sanxingdui Museum, with taxi fares around 20 CNY.
I discovered that since most people getting off at Guanghan North Station are tourists, it can be difficult to get a taxi during peak seasons, sometimes requiring a wait of over 30 minutes.
If you take a taxi directly from Chengdu to the Sanxingdui Museum, the fare ranges from 80 to 150 CNY, depending on where you start in Chengdu.
Sanxingdui is in the northern part of the city, so transportation costs will be lower if you stay in a hotel in the north. I once took a British family by taxi and found it easy to get rides at both ends.
The most hassle-free way is, of course, to take a private tour with a car and an English-speaking guide. This way, you don't have to worry about transportation, and the journey becomes more interesting with the guide's explanations.
China Highlights is happy to customize a memorable Chengdu trip for you and your family.
Here's a detailed itinerary to avoid crowds:
- 7:00 AM: Depart from Chengdu.
At this time, the city is just waking up, and there are fewer cars on the road, making it easy to leave the city. (By 7:30, you'll notice more cars on the road.) You can watch a few short stories about Sanxingdui on YouTube or listen to your guide unravel the mysteries of Sanxingdui.
- 8:30 AM: Arrive at the museum.
I highly recommend starting your visit from the end of the first floor for two reasons:
First, the highlights of Sanxingdui are located at the end of the first floor and throughout the second floor, featuring nearly all the important gold, bronze, and jade artifacts.

At this time, there are fewer people, allowing you to enjoy panoramic photo opportunities with the large standing figure, gold mask, bronze mask, and sacred tree.
Second, the introductory area at the beginning of the museum is too long and large. I've noticed that many visitors, filled with curiosity, spend too much time and energy in this initial part, leaving them fatigued for the key areas later.
The typical museum visit takes 2-3 hours, and if you love archaeology, it may take longer.
There are six things at the Sanxingdui Museum that I think are not to be missed:
1. Bronze Large Standing Figure (青铜大立人像): Standing at 2.62 meters tall, holding "emptiness". Some speculate it holds ivory, while others say it's a ritual tool. Its true purpose remains unsolved.
2. Gold Mask (金面罩): This thin-as-a-wing gold foil perfectly fits a human face, showcasing ancient Shu artisans' skills comparable to modern 3D printing.

3. Gold Scepter (金杖): This is a very unusual artifact. In China's historical tradition, Sanxingdui is unique as a place where kings used scepters.

4. Bronze Sacred Tree (青铜神树): This is the largest single bronze artifact in the world. It is surrounded by many legendary stories, confirming that the "Shan Hai Jing" is not just mythology, but has tangible evidence.
5. Bronze Vertical-eye Mask (青铜纵目面具): The most unique artifact unearthed at Sanxingdui is the bronze mask, and the bronze vertical-eye mask is the largest among them.

6. Mysterious Symbols (神秘符号): The undeciphered symbols on the exhibition walls resemble clues from "The Da Vinci Code," making it fun to play an "archaeological decoding game" with your children.
- 11:00 AM: In-depth exploration of the comprehensive hall.
Focus on the jade zhang (ceremonial blade) used for mountain sacrifices (the earliest "comic strip" in China). You can scan the QR code next to the display case with your phone to see a 3D rotating model of the artifact.
- 12:30 PM: Visit the cultural shop.
The bronze mask ice cream (matcha flavor is the best) and "blind box" artifact models are the most popular. Show your passport at checkout for a 10% discount.
Travel Tips:
- Interactive screens are set up in the corners of the exhibition hall, where children can "repair artifacts" through puzzle games. A Japanese mother exclaimed, "It's even more fun than the Osaka Children's Museum!"
- If you're traveling independently without a guide, consider renting an audio guide at the entrance (20 CNY per unit): available in Chinese, English, Japanese, and Korean, but it may not be updated — for example, the newly unearthed "Pig-nosed Dragon" is not yet included.
Recommended Tours Combining Sanxingdui with Other Attractions
- Cultural Route: Sanxingdui + Jinsha Site (located in Chengdu).
Both Sanxingdui and Jinsha belong to different stages of the ancient Shu civilization and feature gold and bronze masks. Sanxingdui has the king's golden scepter, while Jinsha has the king's golden crown. This route is suitable for history enthusiasts.

- Leisure Route: Panda Base + Sanxingdui .
Spend the morning watching pandas and the afternoon seeing bronze "aliens." A Swiss tourist remarked, "This is the most 'Sichuan' day!" The Panda Base and Sanxingdui are both in northern Chengdu, making transportation convenient.

Is Sanxingdui Wheelchair Friendly?
Sanxingdui is relatively friendly for wheelchair users or those who cannot walk for long periods. For example, there are free wheelchairs available at the entrance (with a deposit of 200 CNY). The number is limited, so it's recommended to arrive early.
Additionally, there is an "accessible viewing platform" on the first floor of the bronze hall, elevated by 50 centimeters, allowing wheelchair users to have a level view of the display cases.
How to Secure Tickets for the Sanxingdui Museum
Tickets for Sanxingdui go on sale on the official website five days in advance. On weekdays during the morning, the number of visitors is not too high, but during the peak months of July and August, ticket availability can be scarce.
During this time, the museum may offer special evening sessions (6:00 PM - 9:00 PM), which are less crowded. It's highly recommended to buy evening tickets, which are only sold on the same day.
