Huangguoshu Waterfall Scenic Area is located in the Zhenning Buyi Miao Autonomous County of Anshun, 45 kilometers from Anshun town, and 128 kilometers from Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou province. The area is Guizhou's number one tourist attraction.
The Largest Waterfall in Asia
Huangguoshu is the largest waterfall in Asia: 101 meters wide, plunging 78 meters down into Xiniu Pool (Rhinoceros Pool), an 11-meter (36-feet) deep rhinoceros-shaped pool, and sending foam up to a height of 100 meters.
The roar of the water can be heard some kilometers away. Rainbows appear on sunny days, adding a touch of extra beauty to the majesty of the cascade.
Spectacle Varies According to Season
The spectacle varies according to season, and volume of water. The rainy season is from May to October and the dry season is from November to April.
Water volume typically peaks in July and August; and troughs in December and January, when the waterfall appears to disintegrate into four pieces of white cloth hanging over the cliff.
Can Be Viewed from All Angles
Huangguoshu is one of the few large and famous waterfalls in the world that can be viewed from above, below, front, back, left and right.
A water-curtain cave is located halfway up the cliff behind the waterfall. It is a naturally-formed cave 134 (440 ft) long, which allows visitors not only to view, but also to hear and touch the waterfall.
It's a good walk to go from the Huangguoshu entrance right round the path through the cave and back again. There are many visitors, especially during holidays.
The Scenic Area
Along with 18 other waterfalls in the area, Huangguoshu forms a spectacular group, appraised by Guinness World Records as the largest such waterfall group in the world.
Besides, there are 4 subterranean rivers in the area, 100 caves and a massive karst complex covering some 450 square kilometers.
Tianxing Bridge
Only 6 km from Huangguoshu, there is another beautiful water-world known as the Tianxing Bridge area.
If Huangguoshu has not yet tired you out, there's a wonderful two-hour walk waiting here for you, complete with flagstones through the water. A spectacular cave and watery stone forest add to the attraction. Beware holiday crowds, however.
Stone Village
Stone Village is located in the famous Huangguoshu Waterfall Scenic Area of southwest Guizhou, just 6 kilometers away from Huangguoshu Waterfall. It is a Buyi Ethnic village, the home of 200 families, totally some 1000 Buyi ethnic people (a biggish minority in the southwest of China). Surrounded by mountains covered by lush trees and rivers, the scenery of the village is very attractive. Wide Stone River passes along the village with a five-cave stone bridge arching over. The stone bridge together with its reflection forms a circle and the reflections of the mountains and trees are chamber in the five holes of the bridge respectively.
It is named as Stone Village for all the architectures in the village are made of stone, stone houses, stone walls, flagstone roofs, flagstone roads, stone bridges and stone banks. Even the kitchenware is also stone-made. Overlapping with each other, its stone houses are built along the mountain slope in apple-pie order. Made of woods and stones without any bricks or tiles, they are strong and durable. And, the dwellers of these stone houses will feel warm in winter and cool in summer. Moreover, designed and built by local people, they are full of local and national features.
Admission
Admission to the waterfall (including the bridge) is currently 180 yuan during the peak season (March 1 to October 31) and 160 yuan during the low season (November 1 to February 29). Opening hours are 8.10 am to 6 pm.
