Weather: The weather is hot and the temperatures are almost the same as those of July, but it is less rainy. The average high temperature is 33 °C (91 °F) and the average low is 23 °C (73 °F).
The rainy season ends in August. There is about 130 mm of total precipitation each August, and it rains about 10 days of the month.
Clothing: Summer clothing is fine. If you want to go rafting on a river, take a swimming costume that also covers your skin to avoid sunburn on a sunny day. The sun is hot, so wear sunglasses and a hat. If you want to hike, wear shoes with good traction.
Things to Do in Zhangjiajie in August
Walk in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park
Traveling through the dazzling green forests of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is a great way to escape from the hot summer days.
It will enchant you with marvelous peaks, verdant trees, cool streams, and fresh air. The highlights you should not miss are the 'Avatar Mountains', Tianzi Mountain, and Golden Whip Stream.
The cable car, glass elevator, shuttle buses, and mini train can help you to save time and minimize sweating.
Visit Tianmen Mountain
Tianmen Mountain is the main attraction in downtown Zhangjiajie. Hiking all the way to the top of the mountain takes about 2 or 3 hours. Taking a 30-minute cable car ride is a cooler and much easier way to enjoy the scenery.
At the top, there is a glass sidewalk that stretches for 600 meters along the side of the peak. It is at an elevation of 1,400 meters (4,600 feet) above the valley floor. Walking on it might be the biggest thrill of the day.
Take a Boat Ride on Baofeng Lake
Surrounded by mountains, Baofeng Lake is filled with pure runoff water from the mountain peaks. It is one of the few relaxing attractions in Zhangjiajie. You can enjoy a boat ride for 30 minutes on the lake.
It is enjoyable to see the reflections of the stunning stone peaks and green trees, and you'll enjoy being entertained by the local minority people as they sing their traditional songs.
Enjoy Rafting on the Mengdong River
To escape the heat, rafting on the Mengdong River (2 hours' drive from downtown Zhangjiajie) is a good option. The hot sun and relatively little amount of rainfall provides good weather for this popular water activity.
The rafting usually takes about 3 hours. The major rapids of the river are thrilling and exciting; there are a few rapids that get your heart pounding, although it is designed to be quite safe. The rapids are interspersed with calm stretches, which give you a chance to enjoy the breathtaking scenery.
