June is the rainiest month in Shanghai, averaging 12 rainy days, with a peak of 22 in 2025. It coincides with the plum rain season, which means several days of damp and rainy weather could be expected.
As the coolest month of Shanghai’s summer season, June’s average temperatures range from 21–27°C (70–81°F). However, daytime highs have often reached 30°C (86°F) in recent years, and by late June, spikes of 38°C (100°F) are possible (as seen on June 27, 2025).
Is June a Good Time to Visit Shanghai?
So, is June a good time? It depends.
For flexible travelers, if you don’t mind occasional downpours and want to beat the scorching heat and massive crowds of July and August, early June can be your best shot.
The first two weeks are generally better, having less rain and temperatures are still bearable. By late June, summer heat and humidity arrive early.
However, compared to spring (from March to May), which is milder and drier, June is clearly a riskier choice.
What to See and Do in Shanghai in June
June’s weather is unpredictable, so you should plan a mix of indoor and flexible outdoor activities to make up a smooth journey.
Early June (1-10): Best for Outdoor Sightseeing Before the Plum Rains
To avoid midday humidity and heat, stroll through the French Concession in early morning or late afternoon. The plane trees here are in full leaf, offering shade, and the occasional rain shower can actually make the streets look more poetic.
Shanghai Disneyland is also at its best, when the weekdays are far less crowded than July or August, and the experience for you and your children will also be greatly enhanced.
Mid- to Late June (11-30): Shift to Indoor Attractions to Ensure a Stable Itinerary
When the plum rains start to arrive, the Shanghai Museum (East Campus) can be a perfect rainy-day haven, where you can easily spend a whole day exploring a corner of China's millennia-long history by appreciating bronzes, jade, ceramics, and calligraphy.
Yu Garden and classical water towns like Zhujiajiao Water Town are still enjoyable if you go on a dry day. Just remember to check the weather forecast and be ready to duck into a teahouse for some West Lake Longjing if it rains.
What’s more, June brings the start of various art and design festivals, so you can keep an eye on the West Bund or M50 art district for indoor galleries and exhibitions hopping.
What to Pack and Wear in Shanghai in June

June in Shanghai is warm, humid, and rainy.
You should pack lightweight, breathable fabrics with quick-dry materials, like sport T-shirts, shorts, or light pants, and a few long-sleeved shirts for cooler rainy days.
As for your shoes, comfortable water-resistant sneakers or sandals that can handle puddles are wise, since the plum rains can arrive without warning. But sunscreen, a sun hat, and sunglasses are still useful, especially early June when the sun can be strong between showers.
