Weather: February is the second coldest month in Huangshan, and rain and snow are both possible. The average daily high temperature is 2 °C (36 °F), and the average nightly low temperature is -4 °C (25 °F), in the city.
The three 1,800m+ peaks are about 1,500 meters higher than the city. This means the tops are about 9 °C (16 °F) colder.
The average precipitation is 112 mm, and it snows or rains half the days of the month. You'll probably have beautiful snow all around. Be cautious while hiking on the icy mountain paths. In higher altitudes, the wind sometimes blows strongly.
You can generally expect much cloudy and foggy weather that make the scenic "seas of clouds" when you look down from the peaks. The fog often impedes visibility. In case of rain, you'll need raingear. Local weather forecast>>
Clothing: a thick coat, gloves, thick socks, head coverings, and good slip resistant shoes. Have rain gear. Waterproof boots and crampons can be rent or bought at the foot and are recommended for ice and snow.
Things to Do in Huangshan in February
Enjoy the Hike Up the Yellow Mountains
Hike in the Yellow Mountains: China's famous, legendary mountain range is inspiring. When it isn't the Chinese New Year holiday week, you can climb the 60 thousand steps to the main Yellow Mountain peaks with less crowding and noise.
Safety: Though paths are cleared each day, if paths are treacherously icy the park management will restrict access for safety reasons.
Ride a Cable Car up in Comfort
At the Yellow Mountains many people find a three or four hour climb up to the highest peaks difficult in cold weather. There are three cable routes (two from the south gate and one from the north gate) that let you see amazing scenery comfortably and go to the 1,400m+ (5,000 feet) level near a warm hotel.
Visit Huangshan's Ancient Streets
Tunxi: A favorite tourist sightseeing and shopping street to go to if the weather is inclement.
Warm Up at the Hot Springs!
The Yellow Mountain Hot Springs are one of the natural wonders of the mountains, a soothing 42 °C (108 °F) and hotter.
