To avoid inclement weather or the stair climb, you could take one of the three enclosed cable cars to the 1,400m+ (5,000 feet) hotel area.
Dine, Shop and Sightsee at Xidi Village
Xidi Village is an old clan village that is listed as a World Heritage. It has well preserved Ming Dynasty era courtyard gardens and houses. It is more authentic and less touristy than nearby artists' favorite Hongcun.

Xidi VillageSchools and universities are out for summer vacation in August, so there is a flood of young hikers eager to climb the peaks. The main paths are crowded with hikers. To avoid the biggest crowds, don't go on Friday or Saturday.
