The temperature, hours of sunshine and ultraviolet radiation decrease in September from July and August, but people will still experience hot and sunny weather.

On average, 1.5 tropical cyclones appear around Hong Kong in September. Half of them are typhoon strength, and the highest wind velocity can reach 118km/h or higher.

When a tropical cyclone is generated on the ocean, the weather in Hong Kong is generally sunny and hot, but there might be regional thunderstorms around nightfall. When the cyclone approaches, the wind will get stronger, and there might be heavy rain lasting for days.

The Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋節)

The Mid-Autumn Festival is the second biggest traditional Chinese festival. It falls in the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, usually September. You can enjoy snacking and dining on hot Chinese food at the many outdoor restaurants while you watch the acrobatic lion dances or other performers.

In Tai Hang Village in Causeway Bay on Hong Kong Island, when night falls, fire dragons fly through streets and alleys! This is not a movie, but a traditional activity of the Fire Dragon Dance during the Hong Kong Mid-Autumn Festival. A "fire dragon" is controlled by over 300 performers.

Lantern displaying activities will be held in many places in Hong Kong. Travelers can have fun with locals by watching traditional stage shows, playing games and joining in on the lantern puzzle quizzes.

Spending the Mid-Autumn Festival in Hong Kong, you must have a taste of the mooncakes. It is a traditional food that only can be eaten in this festival. Besides the traditional lotus seed paste mooncakes, you can also try an ice skin mooncake that originated in Hong Kong. You can explore other flavors of mooncakes or eat a sugar-free mooncake if you are in a diet.
