MegaIce Hockey 5's
Hong Kong's MegaIce Hockey 5's has been held at the end of April or beginning of May since it was founded in 2008. Today, the event has grown to become the largest ice hockey competition in Asia, with nearly 90 teams and over 1,000 players taking part.
The Cheung Chau Bun Festival (長洲太平清醮)
The Cheung Chau Bun Festival is a unique festival in Hong Kong, which is celebrated from the fifth to the ninth day of the fourth lunar month (middle or late May). The lively festival is hosted in Cheung Chau, an offshore island to the southwest of Hong Kong Island.
The must-see highlights of the festival are the Piu Sik (Floating Colours) Parade and the Bun Scrambling Competition.
- The Piu Sik Parade: Children of 5 to 6 years old are dressed as gods or famous people and stand on a special shelf that makes them appear as if they are floating above the crowds. Then they are carried in a parade through the streets and alleys.
- The Bun Scrambling Competition: Over 9,000 "lucky" buns are studded on a 14-meter-high bamboo tower. Competitors climb up the tower and try to collect as many buns as they can.
Buddha's Birthday
Buddha's Birthday is on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month (beginning to middle of May). The festival is also called the Buddha Bathing Festival. On this day, believers gather at the temples to wash the Buddha statues in a symbolic gesture to erase any inner dirt and to purify the mind.
People also eat a type of bitter biscuit, which symbolizes overcoming hardships and welcoming a better future.
