Popular Trains to Other Cities
This train station handles regular train lines for places south of the Yangtze River mainly, while the old Shanghai Station handles regular train lines going northwards. On regular overnight trains you can sleep on the train as you travel and so avoid hotels. Here are some popular slow train travel routes from Shanghai South:
- To Chengdu Station 成都站, K class, 28½ hours, 78 USD (hard bed).
- To Guilin North Station 桂林北站, T class, 19½ hours, 55 USD (hard bed). See Shanghai to Guilin train information>>
- To Hangzhou East Station 杭州东站, T class, about 2 hours, 4 USD (hard seat)

Bullet Trains from Shanghai Hongqiao
Instead of slow trains, you could take a bullet train to most places, which is two or three times faster. For example, from Hongqiao Station there are bullet trains...
- To Guilin Railway Station: There is 1 G-train every day (about 9 hours, 100 USD second class, 159 USD first class). On this one, it might be more economical and convenient just to catch a flight.
- To Nanjing South Railway Station: Slow trains take about 4 hours to Nanjing Station, but G and D trains from Hongqiao will take you to Nanjing South Railway Station in about 1 hour. See Shanghai to Nanjing bullet trains>>
Using the Station
It has a circular design with a north square and a south square where there are bus stations and taxi stands. Inside the building, there are three floors:
- Level 1 has a waiting hall, ticket office, and train platforms.
- Level 2 is the top floor. There is a waiting hall, restrooms, and checkpoints.
The main ticket office is on the eastern side of the North Square.
Temporary luggage deposit is on the southwest corner of the north square and the northwest corner of -1F. About 10 RMB/piece of luggage each day.
Arrive early: The station is quite large and it might take longer than expected to get there. So it is wise to be at the station at least 2 hours ahead of your departure time, especially if you plan on getting a ticket there (longer if it is a crowded holiday period).
